Prevent Hand & Tool Injuries – Every Tool, Every Task, Every Time
Every year, workers suffer preventable injuries from hand tools and portable power tools due to improper tool selection, damaged equipment, poor housekeeping, inadequate training, and failure to follow safe working practices. Most incidents involve cuts, lacerations, puncture wounds, crushed fingers, eye injuries, and hand-arm vibration exposure—injuries that can be prevented through proper planning, inspection, and disciplined execution. The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) emphasizes that employers and workers should assess risks, use the correct tool for the task, maintain equipment in safe condition, and minimize exposure to hazards such as vibration and sharp cutting tools.
Common Causes of Tool-Related Injuries
• Using the wrong tool for the job.
• Damaged, worn, cracked, or poorly maintained tools.
• Removing or bypassing safety guards.
• Poor grip or awkward working positions.
• Failure to wear appropriate PPE.
• Using excessive force or unsafe cutting techniques.
• Carrying sharp tools improperly.
• Prolonged use of vibrating power tools without exposure control.
Five Steps to Prevent Injuries
1. Inspect every tool before use—remove defective tools from service immediately.
2. Select the correct tool designed for the specific task.
3. Protect yourself with suitable PPE, including safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, and hearing protection where required.
4. Control your work area by securing materials, maintaining good housekeeping, and keeping bystanders clear.
5. Report damaged tools, unsafe conditions, near misses, and injuries without delay to prevent recurrence.
Safety Reminder
The safest tool is the one that is inspected, maintained, and used correctly. Stop work immediately if a tool is damaged, defective, or unsuitable for the task. Safety is never compromised for speed or convenience.
